Ron,

You can do this one of two ways. Both begin with you creating a base image the same way that you would prior to running Ghost (ex: install OS/install apps/os updates/app updates/defrag/sysprep/shutdown).

If you have a server from which you can run Windows Deployment Services (comes with Server 2003 and 2008) you can network boot to WDS and create the image from there very easily.

If you don't have WDS available to you, you can install MDT 2008 (which will allow you to download WAIK) and use those utilities to create a Windows PE boot CD-ROM, which you can then boot to and use the command line utilities such as IMAGEX to create and deploy your images.

I will warn you that image creation with Microsoft's technology is slower because images are file-based instead being a straight-up dump of the hard drive. Image deployment is still relatively speedy though.

I'm a Deskside Support guy at a local business, and sometime back I purchase a copy of Ghost 9.0 (ended up costing me $10 after rebate!) and have created a customized Windows XP image using it to save work installing legacy apps I'm hanging onto that I can't upgrade. I was talking to someone here who said I could do the same thing with MDT and WAIK for free. Sounds good, except everything I'm seeing on the Internet assumes SCCM on a server, which I don't have and don't plan to buy. I know Imagex and WinPE is part of either MDT or WIAK, but is it possible to do what I've been doing with Ghost using one of these tools w/o a server and SCCM? If it's that much involved I'd rather stick with Ghost, but I am curious to know.
